In very low-yield wells where pumps are installed in silty formation, will low flow save time?

Unfortunately, low flow purging and sampling has a lower limit for application.  If you get below about a 10th of liter per minute of a flow rate for a stabilized pumping water level, it’s probably not practical for sampling. For example, if a well pumps at 200 or 300 milliliters per minute and it will stabilize within about 10 minutes of pumping – that well is a pretty good candidate.  Even pumping at very low rate of 50 to 100 milliliters per minute, if the well doesn’t stabilize within some reasonable period of time, it’s not a good candidate.  In an extremely low-yield well it’s best to use a passive or no-purge sampling method.  Sampling the water that’s standing in that very low-yield well is about the best indication that we’re going to get of what’s truly in the groundwater surrounding the well screen.  It’s not perfect because, unfortunately, if there is gas exchange within the well bore, that water is likely to be altered to some degree.
