Does the bioreactor landfill have advantages when a landfill is too wet?
The field capacity of waste (its ability to hold liquid) is about a 55% moisture content. However, if you get to the point that the site exceeds the capacity of the leachate collection system then you start to get a build up of liquid. It will start to break out the slide slopes, pounding on the surface, it will blow out anywhere it can. Bioreactor landfills would typically like to operate between a 40% and 50% moisture content in the waste. And, CPA rules in the United States state that 40% is the minimum moisture content to be considered a true bioreactor landfill, but we try to stay below that 55% threshold.
