QED had originally designed its Wellheads to have red port covers. It soon became clear that idea was for the birds.
It turns out that the red port covers were very enticing to birds that were flying in and around various landfills where QED wellheads had been installed. It is assumed that the red color looked like a worm or other tasty treat to the birds – landfill technicians couldn’t keep the ports covered. As more and more port covers were getting snatched up, it became necessary to offer them in a different color. So far, the replaced port covers, in an obviously really boring black color, have managed to stay put on the Wellheads.
